Urine and Urine Stains from Pets on Parquet/Hardwood Floors
Parquet and Laminate are popular flooring options among pet owners. Besides their other advantages, these flooring materials allow you to easily remove pet hair by sweeping or vacuuming. But what should you do if, for example, your dog or cat leaves a urine puddle on the floor? This can happen quickly, especially with very young pets or in exciting situations, such as the presence of unfamiliar visitors. If you have a lacquered parquet floor or laminate flooring and notice the accident immediately, it's not a big problem. Simply clean the pet urine with a bit of lacquer soap or wood cleaner mixed with water. Make sure no moisture is left on the floor. The situation is more challenging with an oiled or waxed parquet floor. Urine can quickly penetrate the wood in this case. This leads to a persistent, unpleasant odor and unsightly stains on the flooring. It is crucial to act quickly and efficiently in such cases.
Removing Pet Urine
To remove pet urine and prevent unpleasant odors, you will need:
- Fine-grain cat litter - coarse litter can scratch the floor
- Myrtle oil, which you can obtain from a health food store
- Lacquer soap/intensive cleaner (for lacquered wood floors, laminate, vinyl) or wood floor soap (for oiled wood floors)
- Warm water
- A bucket, a cloth, and a towel
- A vacuum cleaner
Here's how to remove the urine:
- In half a bucket of warm water, add a few drops of the cleaning agent and 10 drops of myrtle oil.
- Soak the cloth in this solution and use it to wipe away the pet urine.
- Rinse the cloth periodically and continue wiping the floor until it no longer feels sticky.
- Now, you need to remove the moisture from the floor. To do this, generously spread cat litter on the affected area.
- Next, place the towel over the litter and press it down firmly.
- Allow the litter to sit for approximately 10 minutes.
- Afterward, remove the towel and collect the clumps of litter.
- Finally, thoroughly vacuum the area with a vacuum cleaner.
If the floor is oiled parquet, you can also maintain it with floor oil.
How to Remove Pet Urine Stains from Your Wood Floor
Once a visible stain has formed on the floor due to pet urine, you cannot truly remove it, but you can fade it to the point where it is less noticeable.
You will need:
- Vinegar or citric acid
- Salt
- A sufficiently large cloth
- A hairdryer
Here's what to do:
- Apply the lightly diluted citric acid or vinegar generously to the cloth.
- Place the cloth over the stain and weigh it down from above.
- Every hour, lift the cloth and check the result. The stain should gradually fade.
- Once the stain has lightened sufficiently, remove the cloth. Now, use the hairdryer at a low temperature to remove the moisture.
- Remove the last traces of moisture from the wood floor by using a cloth sprinkled with salt.
- This procedure is likely to affect the wax, oil layer, or finish of the surface.
- Now, treat the surface with wax, oil, or finish.
- While the urine stain may not completely disappear, it will only be visible upon close inspection.
Conclusion:
A wooden floor is either waxed, oiled, or varnished. As a pet owner, these sealants have various advantages and disadvantages. On an oiled or waxed floor, scratches from dog or cat claws are not as noticeable. If you also opt for a brushed surface treatment, pet claws should not be an optical problem for years. These floors are also not as smooth as varnished ones, providing better traction for your pets. However, pet urine can penetrate an oiled or waxed floor faster than a varnished one.
On a varnished floor, traces of pet claws are much more visible and quicker to appear. On the flip side, it is more resistant to urine penetration.
So, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons. In any case, regularly trim your pets' claws.
With a swift response when accidents happen and regular, proper maintenance of the floor, you can keep your parquet floor beautiful for a long time as a pet owner.
